There are too many charities out there that need your help without having to dump a bucket of ice water on yourself to raise money (tick tock Jeff Lalloway, Matt Cunningham and Thomas Gordon…I did the ALS challenge and I await your updates). And sometimes, two can benefit from a single contribution.
This Saturday and Sunday, the Northwood High School Drama Department is hosting a mattress sale to raise funds for the school’s exceptional performing arts program. You can purchase all sorts of name brand mattresses direct with a savings of 30 to 60% off and profits from the sale benefit the school’s Drama Department. I don’t need a new mattress but still want to help this organization at Northwood, so I called Lorri Galloway of Anaheim’s Eli Home and asked if the kids she shelters need new beds. Lorri’s answer was “yes.” So this weekend, I’ll buy buying a new mattress to benefit one of the many children the Eli Home protects so these kids can get a good night’s sleep on a brand new bed.
If you didn’t know, the Eli Home is a safe place for abused kids and their mothers who escape abusive situations often times with only the clothes on their backs. The Eli Home is a multi-faceted faith based organization operating three shelter facilities. They have a 13,000 square-foot thrift store, operate as a social enterprise via a place-based initiative called ESCRI, they have corporate offices, professional counseling and therapy staff, organizational staff, dedicated volunteers, board members and a history of awards and accolades that include citations from U.S. Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Lorri tells me one of the shelters has 28 single beds in it and its unclear how old these mattresses are and just how many kids have slept in them over the years. Time for new beds for these kids.
Just swing by Northwood High School Saturday or Sunday from 10AM to 5PM, make a twin bed-mattress purchase and designate for delivery to the Eli Home. The Northwood High Drama Department benefits and so do the kids the Eli Home helps. You can ask your accountant how that contribution works out on your taxes.
