Martin Luther King, Jr. Killed 45 years ago in Memphis

Today in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was fatally shot while standing on a balcony in Memphis. Forty-five years later, Reverend King’s last speech still resonates in American historical memory. Reverend King was a strong advocate for worker rights and was in Memphis, TN in support of the Sanitation Worker’s strike. King spoke at the Mason Temple calling for unity, economic actions, boycotts, and nonviolent protest. At the end of the speech, he discusses the possibility of his untimely death. The next day, King was assassinated on a hotel balcony in Memphis.
