If I didn’t know any better, I would think that the Republicans have somehow become trapped in a time-warp. We’ve got Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan on the national stage promoting the concept of raising military expenditures to the levels of the Cold War; rolling back Women’s rights to the 1950’s where a woman’s place was in the home—barefoot—pregnant— subservient to her husband’s whims.
At the more local level we have two GOP congressional candidates, incumbent Congressman Ed Royce and GOP hopeful Gary Delong, who have decided to add Red Scare and 1950’s racism to the equation.
In The 47th Congressional race, where Gary Delong is running against Alan Lowenthal for a newly drawn seat stretching from Long Beach into Little Saigon, has dipped into the anti-communist fears of the district’s Vietnamese community to promote his candidacy. As reported in the Orange County Register, Delong sent out a Vietnamese language mailer attacking Democratic opponent Alan Lowenthal for his 2008 authorship of a bill that would remove references to communism in the Education Code for community college employees.

Allegations of communist ties is nothing new in the Vietnamese community of Little Saigon. Back in 2008, I wrote about then Assemblyman Van Tran’s antics accusing Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen of having communist ties and her response. In the Vietnamese community, accusations of communism still spark angry reactions and such tactics are common fare in election season.
In the 39th Congressional District, we have Incumbent GOP Congressman Ed Royce spreading racist lies and distortions in mail attacking his opponent Jay Chen. AS reported in the Orange Juice Blog and elsewhere, “Desperate Ed Royce has a new mailer out — and in it, he’s going full-bore racist against his opponent Jay Chen.” The mailer attacks the Chen for the support he has received from his brother, an investment banker based in Hong Kong, who has formed an independent expenditure committee to support his brother’s campaign.

But the 39th race stands out as an example of Orange County based GOP racism at its worst.
OC Weekly’s R. Scott Moxley reports:
Jay Chen’s congressional campaign tells OC Weekly that it received yet another racist, anti-Asian rant over the weekend and this one threatened physical violence against the American-born Democrat who is hoping to unseat incumbent Republican Rep. Ed Royce.
We told you last week about a disgraced Costa Mesa businessman sending Chen, who is of Taiwanese ancestry, an email loaded with racist terms like “chink” and “slant-eyed gook” and “slope.”
The latest attack was also voiced by a person of outstanding intellect and maturity:
“Hey, you little Chinese fucker,” said the man, who voiced support for Royce manliness (no joke) and then went on to call Chen a “little shit” and “a piece of crap.”
Royce’s race-baiting campaign has sparked racist phone calls to Chen’s campaign, and even this yard sign in La Habra Heights. Now it is possible, based on our experience with Royce’s congressional district, that the sign has more to do with President Obama than Mr. Chen. Back during the 2009 Health Care debate Ed Royce held an Orange County town hall meeting where and individual openly distributed a flyer depicting President Obama as Hitler.
From Deborah White’s August 10, 2009 report on LiberalOC:
The Very Ugly
As I reported yesterday, political literature containing Nazi imagery linking President Obama and Adolf Hitler was openly disseminated inside the room just prior to Rep. Royce’s arrival.
The Congressman issued a statement today that an individual “… was able to sneak several highly objectionable fliers… into the meeting” and “Any attempt to portray me or my office as endorsing these repugnant fliers is 100 percent false.”
All well and good, I suppose, except that there wasn’t much sneaking. The young man distributing the 16-page booklets strode confidently up and down stairs on both sides of the room, loudly hawking the slanderous hand-outs as though he was selling peanuts at Anaheim Stadium. “Sneaking” is hardly the operative term.
BEWARE! The Commies Are Coming! The Commies Are Coming!
The Red scare is not coming from China – it is coming from Chicago.
That doesn’t make any sense. “The Red Scare” is a term used to describe the anti-communist hysteria of 1950’s America. It is being resurrected by the Republican Gary DeLong, the candidate who doesn’t want anybody to know he’s a Republican. How odd–he never states his affiliation in ANY of his misleading correspondence or disingenuous mailings.
There is no Red Scare coming from China or any other place. “Chicago?” Are the “commies” hiding in their deep dish pizzas?
Alan Lowenthal:
In 2008 State Senator Allan Lowenthal introduced SB 1322, which became law. Section 8 of Lowenthal’s bill repealed Section 1027.5 of the Government Code.
Section 1027.5
“The State of California finds that: …”
“d) Within the boundaries of the State of California there are active disciplined communist organizations presently functioning for the primary purpose of advancing the objectives of the world Communism movement…”
“(e) One of the objectives of the world communism movement is to place its members in state and local government positions and in state supported educational institutions. If this objective is
successful, propaganda can be disseminated by the members of these organizations among pupils and students by those members who would have the opportunity to teach them and to whom, as teachers, they would look for guidance, authority, and leadership. The members of such groups would use their positions to advocate and teach their doctrines and teach the prescribed Communist Party line group dogma or doctrine without regard to truth or free inquiry…”
“There is a clear and present danger, which the Legislature of the State of California finds is great and imminent, that in order to advance the program, policies and objectives of the world communism movement, communist organizations in the State of California and their members will engage in concerted effort to hamper, restrict, interfere with, impede, or nullify the efforts of the State and the public agencies of the State to comply with and enforce the laws of the State of California and their members will infiltrate and seek employment by the State and its public agencies.”

Ed Royce flyer:
The flyer notified the voters of an official complaint against Jay Chen and American Shinning for violating the Federal Election Law, “specifically, for violation of the prohibition on coordination set forth in 11 CFR” $ “109.21.” According to the flyer America Shining has one donor – Shaw Chen of Hong Kong and Shanghai – who gave $565,000 as of October 1, 2012. The flyer alleges that Shaw Chen is the brother of Jay Chen.
Hey Junior your reply is the equivalent of saying neener neener on the playground. Are you referring perhaps to the Chicago school of business? If so, please show me writings where the school praises the teachings of Marx.
The American Communist Party was born in Chicago in 1919 and headquartered there until 1927.
Not sure what you mean junior. The fact that the American Communist Party was headquartered in Chicago 85 years ago is a bit irrelevant, don’t you think? The US Communist Party is based in New York.
Kengor: I’ll start with Valerie Jarrett, who is Obama’s single closest adviser, like a sister to both the president and first lady.
When Frank Marshall Davis was in Chicago in the 1940s, he hooked up with every communist front-group under the sun—and there were tons of them. One of the worst was the American Peace Mobilization, which Congress correctly identified as “one of the most seditious organizations which ever operated in the United States”—“one of the most notorious and blatantly communist fronts ever organized in this country.” This group, in 1940, pushed to keep America out of the war against Hitler. Why? Because, at that point, Hitler had just signed an alliance with Stalin. American communists, being loyal Soviet patriots with a sworn allegiance to the USSR, always backed Stalin.
It’s a long story, but Frank Marshall Davis worked with this front group. And the 1944 Congressional report listing his involvement also lists the involvement of a fellow Chicagoan named Robert Taylor. Taylor was the grandfather of Valerie Jarrett.
Breitbart.com: This was actually Valerie Jarrett’s grandfather? He worked on this front-group with Frank Marshall Davis, Obama’s mentor?
Kengor: Yes, and that’s not the end of it. Taylor also served with Davis on the Chicago Civil Liberties Committee, another communist front whose members cloaked themselves as civil-rights crusading “progressives.” Both Taylor and Davis jointly served on the board together—meaning they were major players.
And there’s another Jarrett connection in this: Both Taylor and Davis knew another Chicago leftist, Vernon Jarrett. Vernon Jarrett and Davis teamed up on the small publicity team of the communist-controlled Packinghouse Workers Union; incidentally, Frank Marshall Davis publicly wrote a column calling for the nationalization of the meat industry. Vernon Jarrett ultimately became Valerie Jarrett’s father-in-law.
Breitbart.com: So, Obama’s mentor worked in communist fronts and activities with Valerie Jarrett’s father-in-law and grandfather?
Kengor: Precisely.
Kengor: Axelrod was a native New Yorker who came to Chicago in the 1970s for college. He stayed there and began his career as a political reporter, specifically at a small publication called the Hyde Park Herald. He caught the eye of two leftists, David Canter and Don Rose, who became his mentors. He was constantly at the Canter home.
Breitbart.com: Tell us about the Canter family.
Kengor: There’s a lot of information in the book. It’s quite astonishing. I’ll try to be brief.
The Canter family had deep Soviet/communist roots. Before arriving in Chicago, David Canter and his family lived in Moscow. David’s father, Harry Canter, worked for Stalin’s government as an official translator of Lenin’s writings. Harry had been secretary of the Boston Communist Party and ran for governor of Massachusetts on the Communist Party ticket. He was hardcore.
When they got to Chicago, they worked with Frank Marshall Davis in a bunch of ways: Harry and Frank taught together at the communist Abraham Lincoln School. Harry and David and Frank all did work for the Packinghouse Workers Union. They marched in Chicago’s May Day parades. In fact, Harry is listed in the April 28, 1947 edition of Davis’s Chicago Star—the Communist Party newspaper of Chicago, for which Davis was the founding editor-in-chief—wishing “May Day Greetings.” When Davis and his comrades sold the Chicago Star to something called the “Progressive Publishing Company” in September 1948, Harry was one of the board members doing the purchase.
These are just a few examples.
Breitbart.com: Sum it up. Connect the dots again. We have this current troika in Washington—Obama and Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod. Sum up their connections to communist Chicago in the 1940s.
Kengor: Sure. Obama was mentored by Frank Marshall Davis. Davis worked with the Canter family, who mentored David Axelrod. Davis also worked with Vernon Jarrett and Robert Taylor, father-in-law and grandfather to Valerie Jarrett. They all served together in Chicago’s Communist Party circles in the 1940s.
