Dear John: You can’t always get what you want

On Tuesday Supervisor John Moorlach tried to convince his colleagues to approve placement of a Charter Amendment to extend to three the number of terms a County Supervisor could hold in a lifetime. On a three to two vote, his colleagues said no.

Jon Fleischman, a resident of Rancho Santa Margarita and owner of the conservative Flash Report blog, addressed the board on the matter. He objected to the proposal saying that it weakened the existing term-limits and was nothing more than an “attempt by incumbents to extend their own terms.” Challenging Moorlach’s contention that the placement of the measure on the ballot would prompt a “discussion with the voters;” Fleischman said “it’s not a conversation with the voters.” Fleischman pointed out that the measure through its proposed title would tout the lifetime term-limit of three terms and not inform voters that their approval would extend the terms of existing Supervisors, particularly Moorlach.

Supervisors Bates, Campbell, and Nguyen all opposed the proposal, and Supervisor Nelson agreed with Moorlach.
