Costa Mesa Mayor Gary Monahan Throws his Skirt into the Election Ring Early

In spite of the fact that the city council elections are more than a year away, Gary Monahan has publicly announced his intention to run for reelection to the Costa Mesa City Council. He says his early burst towards a power seat in our small town is that he expects the  city employee associations and the Orange County Employees Association to either run their own candidate against him or support any opponent that runs against him. (Ya’ think?) Apparently he believes money is what will make or break this race and the more he can scoop up before the election the better.  His first fund raiser will be held at his bar on October 27th. I imagine getting your potential supporters drunk before asking for money would be a good strategy.  He’s going to need all the help he can get.

Gary Monahan's Opponent for Costa Mesa City Council in 2012?

I think an actual skunk could run against this weak little man and win. Never has this city been so united against a not only the mayor, but all the male members on the city council. But focusing on Gary, let me give you some of the reasons I would bet one of my valued internal organs against him winning. First, and the most obvious,  his callous reaction to handing pink slips to more than half the city employees and the suicide of one of those employees on March 17th of this year by partying at his bar only a few miles away from the tragedy as it was happening.

The photo of him in his kilt was taken only a couple of hours after those events.  His reasoning/excuse for his completely inappropriate behavior was that it was St. Patrick’s Day, the most important day of his life. The fact that he is so lacking in insight and empathy to know that his behavior was beyond horribly inappropriate, and that unless he is St. Patrick himself, it is NOT the most important day of his life, are reason enough to end his political career.

Then there is his lack of leadership on the council. One meeting after another, Gary sits at the dais while Mensinger and Righeimer run the meetings and the city. The only shred of leadership he displays amounts to directing traffic on the dais, and nodding like a a puppet to anything Mensinger and Righeimer say, or text, what ever the case may be.  He is nothing more than a prop on this city council.

Lastly, Gary Monahan has failed our city. He has refused to stand for the people who elected him and his own employees. The quality of services in the city are meaningless to him. Only the political agenda of an extremist and hateful right wing machine are his concern. He and his partners in unethical and destructive politics have torn this city apart and continually ignore their constituents.

Unless Gary Monahan is expecting a miracle, all the money and liquor he can scrape together won’t get him elected. I predict his displaced self confidence will costs his contributors a lot of money and time. I guess announcing that he won’t be running again to spend more quality time with him family would have been too obvious. Gary, can’t wait to see you go.

  1. Hey, it’s a kilt, not a skirt. Oh, looking at the photo, I can understand your confusion. He does look like a Catholic schoolgirl.

    By the way, I hear he has been excommunicated from the Irish American community. Too bad we can’t excommunicate him from Orange County.

  2. Seriously. That snippent about the most important day in his life will haunt him forever. Is someone’s bar not picking up business after crapping on over half the cities population ?

    • You call it a snippet, I call it a window into this man’s soul. As for your attempt to invent a fact by stating that his bar has picked up business after “crapping on over half the cities (sic) population,” how would anyone know if someone’s bar is picking up business without tangible proof that no one, least of all you, has?

      • Hmm.. I read it as Colin saying,
        1) Monahan’s quote will haunt him forever;
        2) That and his bootlicking of the Riggmarshal has caused his bar to lose business.

        My family, friends, a ton of business associates, and myself will never set foot in that establishment again.
        Further, many of us will work to see that Monahan goes down to a richly deserved election defeat.
