With all of the rantings and ravings of whether or not Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez’s statements were or weren’t bigoted or anti-semitic, I’m reminded of a song done by humorist Tom Lehrer years ago entitled “National Brotherhood Week.” The You Tube is here so you can view, and even though the song is decades old, the message behind it still reasonates through staements made by Alvarez, Villa Park council member Deborah Pauley, GOP Central Committee Member Marilyn Davenport and I’ll add Irvine council member Steven Choi in this group for referrng to Irvine council candidate Todd Gallinger as a jihadist simply because Todd’s a Muslim (who ran on a ticket with two Jewish candidates).
Here are the lyrics; consider this post a bit of levity in some of the more absurd things you’ve read posted about the case online in the blog comments.
National Brotherhood Week.
Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks.
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.
But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek.
It’s fun to eulogize
The people you despise,
As long as you don’t let ’em in your school.
Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It’s American as apple pie.
But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans ’cause it’s very chic.
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can’t stand.
You can tolerate him if you try.
Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Muslims,
And everybody hates the Jews.
But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
It’s National Everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood Week.
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you.
It’s only for a week, so have no fear.
Be grateful that it doesn’t last all year!
Cute song Dan – I like it.
Was it racist of Maxine Waters to say that the Tea Party can go to hell? I think so.
No it wasn’t. If Alvarez had told Chase to go to he’ll, that would still violate the city’s code of ethics but would have been a lot less offensive.
Todd Gallinger is a Muslim? Dang, I didn’t think there were any Muslims in Ireland.
Converted and devout. A decent family man who is as honest as the day is long. Did you know there were a number of friends at his wedding who were Jewish?
I don’t think that Claudia ha a racist bone in her body – but she sure as hell is mean spirited to the bone. She is an equal opportunity offender of common decency.
I wouldn’t say racist either. Bigoted is a better word
Hilarious. I still have a cassette of Tom at one of his many concerts. A man to admire for his toungue in cheek outlook on humanity.
Glad you liked it Jeff
