With Congress having finalized a strong Wall Street reform bill, the President urges Congress to finish the job and send the bill to his desk. The legislation reflects 90% of what the President originally proposed, including the strongest consumer financial protections in history with an independent agency to enforce them. It ensures that the trading of derivatives, which helped trigger this crisis, will be brought into the light of day, and enacts the “Volcker Rule,” which will make sure banks protected by safety nets like the FDIC cannot engage in risky trades.

Senate Committee Approves Bill in Response to Pension Fund Investment Scandal

The Senate Public Employment and Retirement Committee approved legislation this week that would require placement agents to register as lobbyists and would end contingency fee arrangements based on winning contracts from California’s public retirement systems. Co-authored by Senator Lou Correa (Santa Ana), Assembly Bill 1743 (AB 1743) would help to ensure that transactions that involve placement agents securing investment assets from the state’s pension funds remain above board.

Hedrick Calls Republican Opponent Ken Calvert ‘the Joe Barton of California’

Democratic Congressional candidate Bill Hedrick today admonished his opponent, Republican Ken Calvert, for $16,725 in campaign contributions received from the oil industry this election cycle and for a $4000 contribution received from BP apologist Joe Barton’s PAC. Hedrick called on Calvert to give $20,725 received in oil industry contributions to small businesses in gulf region.
