OC Remembers 9/11/01
OC Remembers 9/11/01

Orange County: The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) will participate in a Remembrance Service to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2009. This is in memory of the losses suffered at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This service will provide an opportunity for the OCFA to conduct an organizational salute to all of those who lost their lives and pay a special tribute to the following uniformed services:

343 fallen members of FDNY
23 fallen members of NYPD
37 fallen members of the NY Port Authority Police

The services will be held at the flag poles in front of all OCFA Fire Stations. The services will start at 8:46 am and conclude at 9:10 am.

The OCFA would like to extend an open invitation to all fire, law enforcement, EMS professionals, and the residents of our communities to attend the service at any one of our fire stations. Additionally, we would like to say thank you in advance to all of those who take time out of their busy schedules to pay their respects to all of the families who lost their loved ones during this tragic event.

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, firefighters will mark the anniversary with a public ceremony at the Firefighter Memorial in the Civic Center Promenade. The memorial is on Broadway, between Civic Center Drive and Santa Ana Boulevard. That stretch of Broadway will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. so that fire engines can park there.

Other events include:

  • Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchins will be a featured speaker at the 9/11 remembrance event at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. The free event, which starts at 10:30 a.m., will also feature a choir and military honor guard.
  • Choir music and a community candle-lighting ceremony will be featured at the Interfaith Council of North Orange County’s 9/11 Light the Darkness gathering. The event will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at Jessamyn West Park in Yorba Linda.
  • In Laguna Niguel, a candlelit vigil, music by the OCFA’s drum and pipe band, and tributes from community organizations are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The hour-long remembrance event will take place at Crown Valley Community Park’s amphitheater. Bring low back chairs or blankets.
