Well, it looks like we finally have a major department head, Sheriff-Coroner Sandra Hutchens, who understands what it means to Chop at the Top.
In addressing the $28 million in department budget reductions Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has made the CHOICE to cut top management positions rather than investigators. In her status report to the Board of Supervisors today, Hutchens announced that she plans to lay off two Assistant Sheriff’s and six Captains in the department.
“It’s a difficult time, but at the end of the day you have to think of what’s best for the department and best for public safety…
I believe very strongly that would have impacted our front line services, so I decided to cut at the top,” Hutchens told the Board.
It was kind of fun to watch Supervisor Campbell suggest to CEO Tom Mauk that Hutchens’ approach is one he should consider.Â
