New Hampshire Approves Gay Marriage

One of the most conservative New England states, New Hampshire, has approved gay marriage.  Click here for details.

New Hampshire is perhaps the state the OC Register ought to relocate to as it’s easily the most libertarian state in the Union.  Anyone who prints “Live Free or Die” on their license plates walks the walk and talks the talk.

From the story in Boston.com: “The House voted 186-179 to send the bill to the Senate. The first attempt to pass the bill fell one vote short, but opponents were unable to kill it. The House then reconsidered and passed the measure.”

So now, gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Iowa.  It will soon be legal in New York.  At some point, someone will sue and this will go to the US Supreme Court who will likely make gay marriage the law of the land.

But take heart conservatives; you can always move to Texas and hope that Governor Rick Perry carries out his secession plans.  And maybe Todd Palin will convince Sarah Palin to take Alaska with them.

  1. New Hampshire has taken a giant step forward in sending a marriage equality bill to their governor for signing. The NH House voted today to approve same-sex unions and has sent the bill back to the Senate, where I am confident it will pass (again). This is a fantastic day for LGBT equality! Let’s use this momentum to our advantage and do everything we can to convince those in CA that we too deserve equal rights. Prop 8 Decision Day is fast approaching. Please be prepared to take action when it does. The Harvey Milk Stonewall Democrats OC will keep you posted on all events and opportunities to volunteer. Let’s keep moving forward! -John Santoianni, President HMSDOC

  2. This is fantastic news out of New Hampshire…althought their Gov still has to sign it. He is on record stating that “marriage is between a man and a woman” but hasn’t said if he’d sign/veto marriage equality legislation. There’s more lobbying to do!

MA, CT, and VT already have marriage equality and our allies at Equality Maine are working hard in their state, too.

Yesterday I attended a lobbying rally at the New York capitol in Albany calling for Marriage Equality, GENDA, and Dignity for All Students. A GOP Assemblymember spoke at the event in support of equality! New York could be the next to pass these bills and with bi-partisan support!

  3. The bill has now passed the NH Senate! Governor Lynch still hasn’t decided if he will sign it. I have emailed the following letter to his office. I urge everyone to show your support for our cause and send Gov. Lynch a positive message that will help him decide.

    The email read:

    Dear Governor Lynch,
As a fellow Democrat, I am asking for you to support marriage equality for all New Hampshire residents. As president of the Harvey Milk Stonewall Democrats, I know how much our fellow members in your state want to be given all of the same rights and responsibilities as their heterosexual neighbors. That is why I am asking you to sign the bill that has passed both houses of the NH legislature this week and make that dream a reality.
    Best Regards,
    John Santoianni

  4. New Hampshire has become the latest state to show it understands the concept of equality. The momentum is growing as more states are doing the right thing! In CA, as we wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling, we must be prepared either way.
It’s time that Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness be enjoyed by all people!
