With a 65-31 vote the Senate today confirmed President Obama’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary. The final agency director to be confirmed, Kathleen Sebelius will face the challenge of addressing the Swine Flu epidemic in her new role as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Sebelius has been the target of anti-abortion groups because Sebelius underreported the size of contributions from a doctor who performs late term abortions, and for her position on reproductive rights.
I wonder if Orange County California Supervisor’s John Moorlach and Bill Campbell will place a reproductive rights test to any proposed choice to lead the Orange County Health Care Agency? I can imagine McCarthy-esque hearings with Moorlach pounding his fist asking; “Have you ever associated with any supporters of Planned Parenthood? Do you support family planning programs that mention abortion as an option?” But I digress…
With the confirmation of Kathleen Sebelius as our new Secretary of Health and Human Services, we can look forward, hopefully, to the creation of a new national system of health care insurance coverage. While the debate will be serious, I cannot help but add this little bit of humor (sugar) and possibly a new theme to the health care debate led by Sebelius. I hope this helps our Republican friends get over Sebelius’ appointment.
