What are the Top News Stories of the Year?

Just after Christmas every year, the Associated Press releases a list of the top news stories of the year.

For 2008, the election of President-elect Barack Obama, the candidacies of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, the faltering economy, the war in Iraq, the conflict in Georgia, all strike me as good candidates for the global/national top ten.  But what about the top ten stories in California?  The top ten stories in Orange County?

The Gay Marriage issue and Prop 8 battle are certainly a god state story; the ongoing budget crisis and gridlock in the state legislature are another.  In OC, the Mike Carona trial and the fires in Yorba Linda and Brea would make the list.

Help us compile the top 10 stories in the world/nation, state and in the OC.  Just add your two cents below.

  1. For National: The continuing saga of the decline of western civilization courtesy o the Bush Administration: iraq, Economy, Wall Street, Big Thre Automakers, Abrhamofh etc.

California: The Budget Crisi that wont go away.

OC The Van Janet continuing battle; Wildfires; No water in the hydrants.

  2. I have to vote for Carona’s indictment and trial. We have fires almost
    every year.

At the national level I have to say Obama’s election. Given how the
“community organizer” was sneered at by the GOP, but it was one of the
key factors in Obama’s defeat of McCain.

  3. At the state level, the passage of Prop 8 ought to rank if not at the top then at least in the top 3.

The No on 8 campaign was so complacent it did not see the peril until a couple of weeks before election day. That was when people started getting messages along the line of “Do you know any prominent ______ (insert demographic description) who can speak publicly against Prop 8?”

    Too late.
