In a year filled with highs and lows, here’s a first and it’s a high. Today brought an historic announcement. For the first time ever, the LGBT community will have a contingent marching in the Inaugural Parade. According to the NY Times and the Washington Blade, the Lesbian and Gay Bands Association will participate in Barack Obama’s Inaugural Parade. Granted this doesn’t offset the disappointment of Proposition 8, but it is good news, and it is quite welcome.
The Lesbian and Gay Bands Association is made up of marching bands from 27 cities in 18 states plus two each in Canada and Australia.
Though President Clinton permitted the group to perform on the sidewalk during his parades, “[t]his is the first time that an LGBT group will be represented in a Presidential Inaugural Parade, truly our chance to make history,” said the association’s inaugural committee to members Saturday.
I can’t wait to see and hear what they have planned and it gives us all a reason to watch more then the first fifteen minutes.
