Janet “Santa Ana’s Choice”? More Like “Minuteman’s Voice”

Two days ago Republican Santa Ana City Councilman Carlos Bustamante sent out a mailer on behalf of the candidacy of Supervisor Janet Nguyen and touted her as “Santa Ana’s choice” in the upcoming election.  I doubt very seriously that Janet is the “choice” of most residents that know anything about her and I doubt many more would choose her if they knew of her disdain for them, their families and other working class immigrants that make Santa Ana their home.

Since Bustamante and a tiny group of residents want to portray Janet as a “friend” to our community I felt it was important to inform folks that don’t know about Janet’s true feelings about many of our neighbors and remind those of you that may have forgotten.  During last years special election for the First District seat Janet let her true feeling be known about a good many in Santa Ana’s Latino community and it wasn’t pretty.

In a mailer sent out to voters during that election she opined that Latino’s are immigrating to the country “the wrong way”.  On the front of the mailer it showed to young Latino males hopping over barbed wire. (You can see the photo by clicking here)  The message sent by this was not so subtle and a direct shot at many in the Latino community, a shot at many in Santa Ana.  It was also another example of Janet’s trademark pandering, this time pandering to the bigots who use the fear of the “brown people” to market their racist propaganda.

In the mailer Janet insinuated that Vietnamese immigrants came here the right way stating, “My parents did it the right way.”  This statement alone drives a wedge between Latino immigrants and Vietnamese immigrants.  Is this the type of leader we really need?  Wouldn’t we be better served by someone that finds the commonalities between us all and tries to build bridges between our communities?  Obviously Janet disagrees.

She did not stop there and the mailer (click here to see Janet’s letter) goes on to slur the Latino community even more.  “We were escaping communist oppression, not looking for handouts”.  Is that what you think Janet?  These people risk their lives to provide for their familes and you think they are here for “handouts”.  That is simply disgusting.  These folks are here to work and work hard.  These folks are here in an effort to have a better life for themselves and their children just like those that immigrated from Vietnam.  If the Mexican government were communist would you have a different opinion then Janet?

Janet Nguyen has never apologized for this scurilous attack upon the Latino immigrant community.  A majority of Santa Ana’s residents immigrated to the United States.  Some legally, some illegally.  Janet’s mailer from the last election was a direct attack on them all.  We need to let her know that we won’t accept this type of racially divisive political attacks.

Janet wants to be portrayed as “Santa Ana’s choice”.  On June 3rd lets send her the message that she is not.  On June 3rd  you have a choice between Janet’s hateful message of division and Hoa Van Tran’s message of unity.  Do the right thing Santa Ana.

  1. very well said sean. she reminds me of the time when bob dornan put the blame on illegals for him losing to sanchez and when he realized what a dumb thing that was he sent out little posters of the virgin mary to people with latino surnames. (i still have mine somewhere) the thing that bothers me about her most is she’s just such a filthy pig and she and so many others dont see it. she’s the worst kind of cancer we can have in any office let alone a sup. lets just hope she doesnt have very much time left and she can fade away like bob dornan.

  2. The Viet’s vote in large numbers and they vote for Republicans.

So the safe money is on Janet winning in June or in a run off against Dina in November.

  3. Sean,

Would it have been more accurate of Janet to say that she is “the choice of the voting citizens of Santa Ana”?

  4. Sean,

Dina Nguyen flew to the border to complain about Mexicans, whereas Supervisor Nguyen’s campaign last year went off the beaten track not because of her but because of her consultant. She assures me that he will not be allowed to do any of that this time around.

So, Dina is an outright Mexican hater, whereas Janet has done a great job and has in fact been a very popular Supervisor in the Latino community of the First District.

As for Hoa, he has NO CHANCE of winning. He is not ready for prime time and you know it. Furthermore, it is a FACT that he NEVER has anything bad to say about Assemblyman Van Tran.

The clear choice for Supervisor is our incumbent, Supervisor Nguyen.

  5. art, do you think janet was ready for “prime time”? she doesnt make decisions her consultants do that for her? who’s in charge? i watched her in an interview last week she seemed out of sorts and didnt speak very well. is she even qualified?

  6. “Supervisor Nguyen’s campaign last year went off the beaten track not because of her but because of her consultant. She assures me that he will not be allowed to do any of that this time around.”

    It isn’t Janet’s fault she’s a racist, it’s her consultants. That’s just priceless.

She wasn’t to upset with him for going “off the beaten track”. He’s still her consultant.

I love the double standard some people have. Dina “hates” Mexican’s just like Janet’s consultant. Janet hasn’t fired him so I guess she must be in agreement with how he operates.

  7. Art-

You are pathetic sometimes. Let’s do some basic deduction:

Why do OC Supervisors talk about Immigration even though they have NO authority over Federal or State immigration policy? (I will concede that they can enforce immigration issues such as Carona’s OC Jail plan…) Because it mobilizes the base!

Janet’s ad had a picture of people (and of course by “people” I mean “Mexicans”) scaling a fence saying “wrong way” next to a picture of someone taking a citizenship oath with a caption stating “right way”. This is done only to get the Republican base (who Republicans seek to mobilize in elections if you can believe it!) to vote for Janet.

It is the same reason that gay marriage state initiatives happen to spring up in swing states during Presidential years. It’s called “Strategic Politics”. Democrats do it too. They always try to be the “education candidate” because Democrats consistently rate Education at the top of their issue list. It is a way to mobilize the base.

Art, you would be more credible. Wait let me rephrase; you could begin to earn some credibility by not being such a shill for Janet.

  8. You know what’s priceless? Knowing that Sean is going to be removed from the planning commission. I heard it from Vince a few hours ago.

Dude, you shouldn’t have taken those checks from Bisno. Anna Banks will be at the next council meeting so, make sure you say hi.

  9. DNO,

Just let Janet run racist crap this year and see what happens. I have warned her. If she allows her consultant to run any of that stuff again I will personally disavow her AND endorse one of her opponents. How’s that?

  10. Art-

You make statements like you are important. You are somehow saying that the Janet camp has to fear you? What leverage do you have? You agree with everything! You shilled for her on everything from her “SUPERVISOR NUGYEN picks up endorsement of Hispanic 100” (does that mean 100 insults?) to “Santa Ana Business Community Supporting SUPERVISOR JANET NUGYEN” (Caps added)(Quotes from Art). You did all this without any disavowing of her anti-immigrant ads!

By the way… those quotes from above are exactly like press releases! If anyone has Janet press releases please let me know if they are similar…

Art, you cannot be a muckraking blogger and a communication director for an elected official at the same time!

Look at how you address Janet. “Supervisor Nugyen”. While CONGRESSWOMAN Loretta Sanchez is simply “loretta sanchez”
I know that sounds petty, but it is a very easy to read sign of Art’s simple shilling for Janet.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything on this blog, but Art you are a damn hack.

  11. So Janet was force to run because she was appointed by Bustamante. If she feels and thinks that she’s not inline with it, then she should follow her heart. Why run if she does not like it? She might regret if she will listen to what Bustamante told her.
