I grew up next door to a man by the name of gene Epler. Gene is a survivor of Peral harbor and to this day serves as the Regional Chaplain for the Pear Harbor and WWII veterans association. Every year Gene would regail us with his experience that day on December 7th 1941.
I have had the Honor of joining Gene over the years at the Pearl Harbor anniversery breakfast at Los Alamitos. I am proud to have known gene all these years. he still lives next door to my parents in Orange.
After the war Gene became a cinder block contractor helping build many of the freeways an infrastructure here in So California and Orange County. At least once a week, Gene serves our veterans at the grvaeside services of WWII veterans. I am amazed at how this man can do this all these years.
Thank you Dan for posting this. My father was serving at Kaneohe NAS on Oahu on Dec. 7, 1941 and they were attacked by the Japanese at the same time Pearl was attacked. My first cousin once removed is entombed on the Arizona.
I’ve been to the memorial twice and it is a moving experience.
May we always be eternally vigilant.
