Street Theater

On Monday afternoon Treasurer/Tax Collector Chriss Street held his press conference and office remodeling showcase for the public, in particular the press, to see all that he hs accomplished during his 8 months in office.

Plain and simple, the presser was an opportunity to try to makeover his public image.  I am not certain he accomplished what he wanted, but he is one slick fellow. He showed off all of the great efficiencies that he has facilitated with his remodel and even how his efforts have resulted in lower operating costs for his department.

He explained that all the controversy over the past several weeks was simply a big misunderstanding. Street offered to set the record straight by presenting the facts;

“We’d like to have the facts stand for themselves,” Street said. “Once again, I need to do a better job of communicating with everyone, media, the supervisors and the public so they can judge me by the job I’m performing and the successes we are having.”

He offered to those assembled in his newly remodeled offices a large 3-ring binder full of explanations for all of those misunderstandings.  My guess is that it will take several weeks to review all of the data he handed out.

Mario Mainero, Supervisor Moorlach’s Chief of Staff had this to say to the Register about the information Street released; “The very fact that he provided a more than 3-inch binder in and of itself indicates how complex are the matters he must deal with outside of his duties as treasurer.”

So join me on the flip for more of Chris Street’s “Masterpiece Theater.”

First Street showed everyone the new lush carpet that was installed.  As you can see he really was proud of it and made sure to point out that the new carpet was only installed in the “Public Areas.”

Then he showed off the color scheme he had selected for the offices, which conveniently coordinated with his Suit and Shirt.

He even showed everyone what the work-stations looked like with people in them.

At the press conference Street played dodge-ball with the assembled media representatives.  He parried questions about whether he had done anything wrong and sparred with Peggy Lowe over the details of a memo highlighted by Supervisor Moorlach as an example of improper actions on his part.  Street explained that he wanted to open his books and offered his staff and himself to answer questions.  It was interesting that when asked by Red County/OC Blog’s Matt Cunningham to identify the many elected officials who had called to offer their support during his troubled times, Street preferred to leave it to them to identify themselves.

Street was asked at the press conference what he would be doing if the Board of Supervisor’s removed his investing authority.

Matt Cunningham has video from the press conference on Red County/OC Blog and Peggy Lowe has full coverage of the event in a web-article at OCRegister.com.

Late today, Nick Berardino, General Manager of the Orange County Employee’s Association, announced a press conference scheduled for tomorrow at 10:00 AM. Berardino is expected to call for the Recall of Chriss Street if he does not resign.

  1. In the presser Street noted what a fabulous job he has been doing in the last eight months. He has increased collections, reduced his operating expenses and even improved telephone answering response times. This left me wondering because he could not reference any baseline numbers on which to prove the stated improvements actually existed. So we are left to take his word, and currently his word is mud.

    Additionally, if Street has made such significant improvements in just eight months, what the heck was Moorlach doing all those years as Treasurer?
