Basketball Advice for Rep. DeVore

HT to Orange Juice for this photo of State Rep Chuck DeVore in a basketball uniform at a Charity Game between Republican and Democratic politicians at a recent Sac Kings game (won convincingly by the Republicans).

Some basketball advice to Rep. DeVore.  From a former player, college hoops sports information director, Youth basketball coach (5 years, boys and girls) and comissioner, and all-star coach (namely, moi).  Its the first thing I tell my team’s parents in that first parent meeting before the first practice.

Buy a pair of real basketball shoes.

Wearing cross-trainers or running shoes (the upturned sole in the front is a giveaway here) just screams “nerd” on the court, though in Chuck’s case, I’d use “wonk” because I don’t think he would view that negatively (I don’t and hope he doesn’t).  So “wonk” on the court works for me.

I think cross trainers or running shoes act more like iceskates on the pine and hightops offer more support.  At least Chuck isn’t wearing black socks.  And wha…no tats, no headband????

  1. Dan,

You’re right about the shoes. I used to always have a decent pair of basketball shoes. But after I joined the Army in 1983 I gave up buying them for running shoes (the Army physical fitness test has a 2 mile run, but no basketball element) — I’m just too cheap, ah, er, “fiscally conservative” to have more than what I require.

Don’t worry though, my own staff razzed me about it. I didn’t hear them though, I was too focused on whomping the other side.

    All the best,

    Chuck DeVore
    State Assemblyman, 70th District

  2. Chuck —
My bball shoes are six years old; I’d rather buy new pairs for the kids, as I’m sure you would for yours. But the uniform looks fab; no army tat?
