Total Buzz and the Irvine World News have reported that Irvine council member Dr. Stephen Choi has formed a committee to explore a bid for Todd Spitzer’s termed out assembly seat. If Dr. Choi does run, it will be as a carpetbagger and we can all ask Umberg and Daucher how well that workd out for them. An Update: Per Allan Bartlett and with a little better map on the CA-71, I retract the Carpetbagger comment as it appears Dr. Choi does live in the district.
Since the good Dr. signed his name to the infamous Irvine Chronicle in 2004, ethics hasn’t been Dr. Choi’s strong suit. For Sonya Smith, if you’re reading this instead of Powder Blue, have Don Dennis pull out the copy of the political mailer and then review the text of the articles in the flier versus the real stories that ran in the paper. Edited to be more negative, and guess what? It might even have carried your byline. Let me know what your J-school ethics prof would have to say about that. If this were the days of non-corporate ownerships, newspapers would have sued for copyright infringement and won.ÂÂ
I remember Dr. Choi campaigning in front of the Albertson’s on Irvine Blvd during his first run for council. Early voting was going on. And Choi claimed to be the correct distance away from the voting machine. I don’t know if the law looks at physical distance or an address, but even if what he did was legal, I don’t see it as ethical.
Please run for Assembly, Dr, Choi. Fastest way to get you off the Irvine City Council. And thanks for your NO vote on the living wage (you too Ms. Shea); perhaps you can explain to those blue collar workers in Spitzer’s district why you voted against raising the wage of working men and women to a point just over the poverty line.
You sure about the carpet bagging comment? He lives in Irvine, he must or he would not be on the council and some of irvine is in 71st.
Fact: Dr. Choi lives in Irvine of course and he lives in the 71st Assembly District.
I don’t believe any part of the district is in Irvine. I went to Spitzer’s web page and Irvine isn’t mentioned as one of the cities he represents. And even if he lives in a small silver of “West Irvine” that covers the district, I have to believe he’s vulnerable on his votes on the living wage. Lots of blue collar voters in the district.
Irvine is squarely in AD 70. In fact, the northern border of Irvine is the southern border of AD 71. I’m looking at a map of the cities and districts right now.
You’re such a jackass sometimes Dan. Steven lives in Woodbury which is in the 71st Assembly District. I’ll be waiting for you to post the correction of Steven being a carpetbagger later today.
From Spitzer’s website: Proudly Serving: Santa Ana, Corona, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Orange, Norco, Tustin, Anaheim
The map shows the district but lacks city borders; if I’m wrong here, I am happy to retract the carpetbagger statement but not anything else.
Allan —
I have posted a correction. Here’s a better map. http://www.assembly.ca.gov/committee/c7/asmfinal/ASMMAPS/MAP71_150.JPG
Based on Woodbury as his address, I made a factual mistake and its corrected.
I’m happy to start calling out all the mistakes Lee posts on your site on a regular basis.
Not to beat a dead horse, but simply in order for me to understand better, could someone help me here? I’m not familiar with the Woodbury area, but Google shows it as more-or-less at the intersection of Culver & Portola and as part of the city of Irvine. My map of AD71 as well as the link provided above show that Irvine, or at least that particular part of Irvine, is not in AD71. If you want, you can email me at gary_kephart@pobox.com so as not to clutter this up. Thanks.
No sweat Gary. Woodbury is a new community in Irvine wherre the borders ae the 5 freeway, Sand Canyon, Irvine Blvd and Jeffrey. Mucho expensive.
Silly me, I went to Todd Spitzer’s website to get a list of the communities he represents and Irvine is not to be found.
That all said, if you want a politician that places his party ahead of the people he represents, Choi’s your man. As a member of the IUSD school board, he lamented not having funds for GATE kids due to the high cost of special education. His son is a nice young man though.
Ah, got it. Google showed the wrong spot. Yes, since it is north of the 5 and east of Jeffrey, I can see that it is in AD71.
And thanks for the advice on Choi. 😉
