Disappointment

I’m pretty disappointed to see that the Californians United PAC is funding Otto Bade mailers. The story unfolded yesterday on the Total Buzz Blog, and was written about in the Los Angeles Times this morning.

Orange County Democrats were in a good place…we’ve taken the moral high ground on a lot of issues lately. Republican Tan Nguyen is a racist. Republicans hired crooks to bolster voter registration numbers. Democrats were on the right side of the issues.

But this IE stuff makes Correa look bad. Sure, IE’s are independent, and Correa can’t control what they do. But we all know what it looks like.

Going through expenditures, you can see that this is the work of Don Perata (who recruited Lou for this race) and Sandy Polka (she who brought us all of the lovely Claudia Alvarez campaign literature).

Nothing nice to say here, so I’ll refrain.

  1. Yes, Mike, I’m disappointed as well. Perata and company did not have to stoop to such cheap tricks to get Lou elected. Lou is a strong enough candidate that he can run on his own terrific credentials.

Now remember… This is an IE afterall, so let’s not blame Lou for this. He has no control over this crap. If anything, this is yet another example of why we need better Democratic leadership in Sacramento.

Also, this is yet another reason why we need Prop 89 to clean up the election process.

  2. I’m leaning towards voting FOR Prop. 89, despite it’s flaws, but I’m not sure it can or would do anything about the growing power of the independent expenditure committee (Buckley v. Valeo, political money = free speech and all that). It will be tied up in courts for a while.
My fear is that money will continue to flow in support of or opposition to candidates, but will find a more obscure way there.
I’m really torn on this one.

  3. Mike I have to agree this is rather stupid. I’m just not sure it can be tied directly to Correa. This is an example of Sacramento Dems thinking they know what is best in Orange County. This is just one more reason why we need real Campaign Fincnce Reform. I’m not sure that 89 can solve that problem, but I know that somehow this crap needs to change.
