Californians for Voter ID Begins Signature Gathering Effort

This press release showed up today offering the folly if California only had voter ID, Republicans would win more elections because undocumented immigrants here vote for Democrats.  Nope.  But Republicans do commit voter fraud by registering dogs to vote.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Last Friday, September 19th, Californians for Voter ID received the official title and summary for its voter ID ballot initiative from the Attorney General’s office, starting the clock for signature collection.

Throughout the following 180 days, ending on Wednesday, March 18th, Californians for Voter ID will collect 1,000,000 signatures to meet the 874,641 minimum required by law to qualify Voter ID for the 2026 ballot.

Julie Luckey, Chairman of Californians for Voter ID, said, “Californians across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support commonsense voter ID, and we are fully committed to qualifying this initiative for the ballot. With strong public backing and a mobilized team ready to collect the signatures needed, our job is simple: make sure voters get their say on this widely popular reform next November.”

Signature gatherers hit the streets today, collecting the first signatures to place voter ID on California’s 2026 ballot.

Official Initiative Language

ESTABLISHES ADDITIONAL VOTER IDENTIFICATION AND CITIZENSHIP VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.

Under current law, when registering to vote, individuals must state under penalty of perjury that they are United States citizens and provide information to verify their identity (e.g., birthdate, driver’s license or Social Security number). This measure would amend the California Constitution to further require that:

• voters present government-issued identification at the polls or the last four digits of a government-issued identification number when voting by mail;

• the State provide voter identification cards on request; and

• elections officials annually report percentage of each county’s voters whose citizenship they have verified.
