Maybe it’s Steven Choi’s ineffectiveness or advanced age — perhaps a concern on cognitive decline — but TheLiberalOC was sent copies of Irvine Vice Mayor James Mai’s filing to run for State Senate in SD37 in 2028.

Mai is 7 months into his first term as an Irvine City Council member. Sources tell us Republicans want him to challenge Rep. Derek Tran in Little Saigon. Mai still carries considerable social media baggage for that race. But looks like he’d like to retire Dr. Choi who really needs to retire due to his advanced age and ineffectiveness as a state senator.
Steven choi is not eligible to run for state senate in 2028. At the end of his current senate term he will have served 10 years in the assembly & senate combined.the lifetime limit for legislators elected after June 2012 is 12 years in either the assembly, senate or both combined.
