Rumor Mill in CA40 Ramping Up

With the changes to Congressional districts that may happen in California as he result of Proposition 50, CA40, now represented by Young Kim, will actually get a darker shade of red.  That doesn’t mean she can’t be beat.  It’s still a matter of communicating to voters that her support of the Big Beautiful Bill and the harm this legislation will do to CA40 residents regardless of political affiliation need to be convinced Rep. Kim isn’t up for the job.

But the “will it pass”/”won’t it pass” is creating angst among some of the candidates running as Democrats for CA40 in the 2026 primary.  So, trusted tipsters have given me two tips and I’ve gone directly to the campaigns for comment.  One campaign responded in minutes to deny the rumor and the other has said nothing.  So here’s what’s floating out there.

My sources say that Perry Meade is between a rock and a hard place.  He has come out in strong support of Prop 50 but has determined that if Prop 50 passes, he has no way forward and will decide next month what to do.  Polling will be more solid then.  If it looks like Proo 50 fails, Meade stays in the race.  If it passes, he’s out and he will throw his support to the candidate he thinks can win.  Gotta be tough asking folks for money if you’re planning on bolting the race because the climb is harder.

We resent that candidate Q&A with softball questions to the Meade team at JZ Strategies on August 12; no response yet.  We asked for a reaction to Esther Kim Varet’s filings on the acquisition of 58K followings on Meade’s Instagram page and got a response in hours.  We reached out on the rumor Perry’s out if 50 passes and still no response.

Esther Kim Varet

The second hot rumor was that Varet would shift her campaign from CA40 to CA48, which is Darryl Issa’s seat that’s about to be a deeper hue of blue.  And I think she’d have a real shot there.  The Varet campaign got back to us within 60 minutes to deny the rumor.  Varet even called personally to say there’s no there, there.  Varet is still in it to win it.

Got a tip?  Text me or send email.  I can keep your information confidential but I will be calling the candidates.
