It’s still a bit jarring, yet not unexpected, to learn of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s passnig this morning at the age of 90.

Today is not the day to speculate on how Gov. Gavin Newsom fills her seat, but rather its time to acknowledge her groundbreaking career.  Like every elected official, her record is filled with accomplishments and disappointments, and as Democrats, we will mourn her passing and honor her contribution as a senator of distinction.

For nearly three decades, she has represented California in the Senate, leaving an indelible mark on the state’s politics and on the nation as a whole. With a diverse and accomplished career in both public service and private life, Senator Feinstein’s contributions have been vast and varied.

Early Life and Career

Born on June 22, 1933, in San Francisco, California, Dianne Emiel Goldman Feinstein grew up in a family deeply committed to civic engagement and community service. After graduating from Stanford University in 1955 with a degree in history, Feinstein continued her education at Stanford Law School, where she earned her J.D. in 1958. She then began her legal career as a clerk for the California Court of Appeals and later joined a prominent San Francisco law firm.

In 1978, she was appointed to the position following the tragic assassination of Mayor George Moscone. Feinstein’s calm and steady leadership during that tumultuous time earned her widespread respect and laid the groundwork for her political career.  Her public address following the tragedy, where she announced the news to the stunned city, demonstrated her poise and strength during a deeply emotional time.

Feinstein served as Mayor from 1978 to 1988, making her the first woman to hold the office in San Francisco’s history. Her term in office was marked by a focus on public safety, fiscal responsibility, and economic development. She implemented policies that helped revitalize the city’s economy, including support for the burgeoning technology industry in the city and Silicon Valley.

In 1992, Dianne Feinstein made the leap from local to national politics when she was elected to the United States Senate.  One of Senator Feinstein’s enduring commitments has been to the environment. She has been a vocal advocate for environmental conservation and responsible climate policy. Throughout her career, she has championed legislation aimed at protecting California’s natural beauty, including efforts to safeguard the state’s coastlines and national parks. Her work has contributed to the preservation of vital natural resources for future generations.

Feinstein’s role on the Senate Judiciary Committee has also been pivotal. She has been involved in the confirmation of numerous federal judges and Supreme Court justices. Her commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring that the judiciary is independent and impartial has made her an influential figure in the realm of American jurisprudence. And not every vote she took here is looked upon as favorable.

Throughout her Senate career, Feinstein has been a strong advocate for gun control and has worked tirelessly to pass legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. Her advocacy has earned her both praise and criticism, but she has remained resolute in her dedication to addressing this critical issue.

Throughout her career, Senator Feinstein has been known for her willingness to reach across the aisle and work with members of both political parties to find common ground. Her pragmatic approach to legislating has resulted in the passage of numerous bills, including those related to water infrastructure, healthcare, and veterans’ issues. In a political climate marked by increasing polarization, Feinstein’s ability to build bipartisan coalitions has been a valuable asset.

As a Democrat, Senator Feinstein has been a bridge between progressive and more moderate voices within her party. Her ability to navigate these political waters has made her an influential figure not only within her party but also in the broader political landscape.  She was not the endorsed candidate for Senate by the CDP in 2018, but she went on to be re-elected by a large margin in her last campaign for office.

Her legacy is one of leadership, bipartisanship, and a deep commitment to the principles of democracy. As California’s senior Senator, she has been a steadfast voice for her constituents, tackling complex and challenging issues with grace and determination.

Dianne Feinstein’s long career serves as an inspiration to all who aspire to serve the public and make a meaningful difference in the world of politics. Her contributions to California and the nation will be remembered and honored for generations to come, a testament to the enduring impact of a dedicated public servant.

  1. Feinstein did not take one cent of the $69 million she (with her investing spouse) accumulated as a “public servant”. May God have mercy on her soul.
