Rep. Matt Gaetz fat Shaming of Pro-Choice Supporter Backfire$ $pectacularly

Slimey Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz recently fat shamed women who are pro-choice at a Turning Point USA event. An advocate responded to him in Twitter And Gaetz upped the ante by quote-tweeting her response with her photo.  Olivia Julianna, a 19 year old from Texas, had none of it and used Gaetz’s Tweet to fundraise for abortion rights.

As of Thursday July 28 at noon, Julianna had raised more than $700,000.  Update: As of Friday morning at 8AM PDT, it’s $1.4 million.

Here are details from Yahoo news:

At a Turning Point USA Student Action Summit over the weekend, Gaetz questioned, “Why is it that the women with the least likelihood of getting pregnant are the ones most worried about abortions? Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb.” But he didn’t stop there: “These people are odious from the inside out. They’re like 5’2″, 350 pounds, and they’re like, ‘Give me my abortions or I’ll get up and march and protest.’”

When Julianna saw his fatphobic, misogynistic comments, the Gen-Z for Change abortion-rights activist felt compelled to respond. “I’m actually 5’11. 6’4 in heels,” she tweeted to her almost 190,000 Twitter followers. “I wear them so small men like you are reminded of your place.” Gaetz responded by quote-tweeting an article about his comments “raising the dander of his opponents” with a photo of Olivia along with the words “Dander raised.”

The 19-year-old decided to “flip the script” on the congressman’s “hateful comments,” urging her followers to donate to abortion funds.

The overturning of Roe V. Wade is heartbreaking, devastating, and dangerous. Like millions of Americans, Gen-Z for Change finds it absolutely unacceptable that people are being stripped of a basic human right, control over their own body.

Let’s be clear: Abortion is healthcare. Healthcare is a human right. And abortions have always and will always continue to happen — the Supreme Court taking away this right will only ensure that they will not always be done safely. This decision is hateful and an act of systemic violence. It will disproportionately impact already marginalized communities including but not limited to BIPOC, people with low incomes, people living in rural areas, LGBTQIA+, disabled people, and immigrants.

The time is now. This is no longer a theory or prediction. We will not stop fighting, we will not stop organizing, we will not stop protesting until every single individual in this country is empowered, protected, and given CHOICE.

However you are feeling, you are not alone. We must channel this energy to mobilize and take action. It’s important to directly support those who need it most by supporting funds that provide the direct services, support, and resources people need most at this time.
