Orange, Calif. — Upon news today of U.S. Congressman Alan Lowenthal’s announced resignation at the close of his term in 2022, Democratic Party of Orange County Chairwoman Ada Briceño released the following statement:

“Orange County Democrats are incredibly grateful for Congressman Alan Lowenthal’s remarkable three decades of public service. A true progressive champion from the start of his public service career, Congressman Lowenthal will leave a lasting impact for environmental justice, public schools, LGBTQ+ justice, immigration reform, workers’ rights and America’s global leadership, among many other issues.

Orange County’s historic Democratic growth is possible because of courageous leadership built over many years by forerunning visionaries. We are proud of Congressman Lowenthal’s career, and we thank him and his team and wish them well in this transition. Through the remainder of his term, we plan on continuing to work with him as an advocate for our Democratic values in Washington.”

About the Democratic Party of Orange County

Once famously known as “Reagan country,” after President Reagan called Orange County the place where “all good Republicans go to die,” Orange County is rapidly shifting from a Republican stronghold into a highly diverse Democratic metropolitan region. Over the past four years, Orange County Democrats built a 5-point gain in voter registration.

Chairwoman Ada Briceño, a longtime labor organizer, Co-President of UNITE HERE Local 11, and Democratic National Committee member, is the first immigrant and second Latina to lead the Democratic Party of Orange County. At age 23, Executive Director Ajay Mohan became the youngest person and first Indian-American to hold that role.

Orange County Democrats keep scoring historic victories. In 2018, they famously swept all seven Congressional seats in Orange County. In 2019, OC Democrats overtook countywide voter registration to become the region’s leading political party, and in 2020, Democrats flipped 20 local seats and two state senate seats from red to blue. In 2021, OC Democrats achieved sizable victories in two special elections, by electing Katrina Foley as the first female Democrat to serve in the Orange County Board of Supervisors in February, and defeating the California recall attempt in Orange County in September.
