Rep. Lou Correa Votes No On Budget Deal
Washington DC – Today, Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) released the following statement regarding his vote against the budget deal:
“I want to acknowledge this bill is a compromise and I support keeping the government open, but budgets represent values, and this budget does not represent my district’s values. This budget continues to scapegoat Latinos and perpetuate President Trump’s bad border wall policies. Additionally, it fails to acknowledge our border region for the economic powerhouse that it is—instead branding it a dangerous threat to our country.
“Mexico is the United States’ third largest trading partner in the world. Our border region is the 12th largest economy on earth. Separating our two nations with a wall ignores our economic interdependence. We must address our security concerns cooperatively with our Mexican allies because the only real border security that works is a safe and protected region. When Mexico is strong and secure, our border is as well.
“That is why we must continue to work with our Mexican and Canadian partners and invest in the border technology we know works—like sharing intelligence, drug dogs, advanced scanning at ports of entries, and better-trained border agents. President Trump’s border wall fails to address the real issues, and will only hurt our economy and our immigrant communities.”
