Sanchez Frustrated By Comments of Afghanistan President Karzai

Karzai says Afghanistan would help Pakistan Against U.S. Attack

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47)

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Homeland Security, today released the following statement in response to Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s comments over the weekend that if the United States and Pakistan ever went to war, his country would back Pakistan.

“Afghan President Hamid Karzai has recently asserted that Afghanistan would side with Pakistan in a hypothetical war against the United States,” said Sanchez.  “These comments are especially frustrating given the United States continues to invest endless amount of resources – including our young men and women – for the people of Afghanistan. More than 2,700 Americans have lost their lives in Afghanistan and $467 billion taxpayer dollars have been spent to support a corrupt government that does not support us.  It is in our best national security interest to exit Afghanistan and move to a more effective counterterrorism strategy to protect our nation.”

Rep. Sanchez has long advocated for a withdrawal from Afghanistan and the investment of taxpayer money domestically to power the recovery of our struggling economy, support our schools and critical social services, and help unemployed Americans find jobs.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California’s 47th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and parts of Fullerton in Orange County.  She serves as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces and a senior member of the Committee on Homeland Security. Rep. Sanchez is also a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition and sits on the bipartisan, bicameral Joint Economic Committee.
