Today, at the Department of the Interior, President Barack Obama kept his campaign promise to end the ban on gay and lesbian Americans serving openly in the armed forces of the United States. With his signature today, the President put in motion the end of a policy that has hurt our military as a whole, that has forced thousands of those who serve to do so under a cloud of anxiety and isolation, and that has stood as a symbol of the barriers to unity and equality in our country.

Austerity: Who’s really paying for the great recession?

Austerity budgets cut at the core infrastructure costs of services provided by local governments. Such cuts weaken our infrastructure of public services ultimately causing them to break under the weight of trying to do too much with too little. Breaking government, starving the beast, is the goal of anti-government GOP elected officials like Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach, who are now focused on using the ruse of austerity as a means to that end.

OC Fairgrounds Sale Halted by 4th District Court of Appeals

Voice of Orange County’s Norberto Santana, Jr. reported Tuesday afternoon that the California 4th District Court of Appeal on Tuesday upheld a temporary restraining order halting the sale of the Orange County Fairgrounds until Jan. 10, and in doing so put a near-final nail in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plans to sell the 150-acre property in Costa Mesa.

OCEA’s Berardino: Time to move forward, not back, on pensions

On Sunday, Orange County Employees Association (OCEA) General Manager Nick Berardino responded to Supervisor John Moorlach’s op-ed regarding the looming state and local budget shortfalls and the impact of public employee pensions on that crisis. Berardino points out that OCEA members have taken the lead in reform and Moortlach’s rhetoric does more to move us backwards on the road towards futher cooperation.
