Santa Ana’s Councilman Tinajero breaks another law

Sal Tinajero - "I didn't know."

The past couple of months have been a bit rough for Santa Ana City Councilman Sal Tinajero. So far, investigations by TheLiberalOC and the Orange County Register have revealed that the Councilman has voted on projects benefiting large campaign contributors at least 4 times in the past 120 days. A casual observer would expect that by now, Tinajero would be all over keeping his nose clean. Well, if he’s trying it isn’t really looking like he’s doing a good job of it.

One of the simplest things for a candidate or elected official to do is to file their campaign finance reports on time. The first pre-election statements were due to the Santa Ana City Clerk by 5 pm on Tuesday. As of 5 pm Wednesday, Tinajero had not filed his required report and according to the City Clerk, Tinajero had told her it would be filed some time today, two days after the due date. We’ll let you know if we find anything strange in his reports once they’re filed and we get a chance to review them.

Every other candidate for city office turned in their reports on time. I wonder if Sal, a school teacher, will claim “his dog ate is camapaign report?”

  1. Well, I can think of many more “serious” laws that are broken every day than this one (especially in Santa Ana:-)), but if he missed the deadline, shame on him, as he is supposed to lead by example. I would imagine, however, that he is carefully scrutinizing the report because of all the recent hoopla. Time will tell if there is cause for concern, I suppose.
