What’s up with the Westminster School Board?

Seriously, what the hell is going on with the Westminster School Board? Remember last year when they were millimeters away from losing $8 million in annual funding because they refused to update their archaic rule books? [Link]

Teachers in the district have been working without a union contract since September and they show up at all the school board meetings to picket.

And then this Friday will be the last day for Mel Lopez, the acting Superintendent. Lopez is the fifth high-level administrator in the district to resign during this school year. [OC Register]

Some are even calling the decision to rescind the job offer racist. I know that Nguyen-Lam would have been the first Vietnamese American superintendent in the United States, but I can’t find any evidence that the decision to rescind the vote was racially motivated.

With that said, I think that it is time to notice that our student bodies don’t mirror our school administrations. We’ve got large districts that are packed full of ethnic minorities, ran by fat white guys wearing brown ties. Wake up, Westminster, and smell the culturally diverse coffee!

If you’ve got an opinion about anything mentioned in this post, you should show up (early) to the next Westminster School Board meeting: This Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. The meetings take place at 14121 Cedarwood Avenue in Westminster. A group of people will be meeting at 6 p.m., so I would show up early to assure you get a seat.
